Today we are talking about what does it take to be a great leader and how Leading with an Organisational Culture and value of Human Element in business can boost your business growth. Why should we all work on Bringing the Humanity back into business and what does it mean to be relatable and approachable business.
LEADERSHIP IS A CHOICE - 
NOT A POSITION.

Being a leader is a choice and by choosing to a leader, we choose to be the light, 
an inspiration, 
a coach, 
mentor and 
a motivator. 

We choose to lead by example and be a role model. 
To be there for our teams and provide unconditional support.

Being a leader for the sake of holding the position, for the money and position of Authority, defies the purpose of a Leader and corrupts their values.
Many argue that leadership is a Set of values, skills and behaviours we can all develop,  at every level, in every role. 
I have a few arguments about it but let's say: 
If we all discover the leader in us, imagine what we can achieve as individuals, as teams and as a business?

Is Leadership the ability to make the right decisions and contribute to many different aspects of our organisation? 
Is Leadership the understanding to work well with our colleagues?
Is Leadership the passion to achieve the highest standards?
Is Leadership being aligned to the purpose and objectives of a business, and focus on the main principles of being a leader.

YES IT IS, but it's much more!

Leader or a Manager is NOT JUST A Leader or Manager - If you are a leader or manager, YOU’RE ALSO AN EMPLOYEE and the Role model
who needs to strive to:
  • Achieve business excellence – driving high standards of performance in everything we do
  • Define and shapes direction – contributing to the business in all the work we do
  • Engage and inspires people – collaborating and growing the skills and competencies of ourselves and others


So, the question is:
How can we achieve this as an organisation?

Leading with an Organisational Culture - topic we can talk about in the next  5 videos, and requires many deep organisational changes but the most important one is the right organisational mindset. 
What can we do to start changing the organisational mindset? 
What, as a business owner, a  leader or a manger you can do to make it happen?

Lets start with a major misconception.
The major misconception, in the business world, is that humans are employed as a resource, replaceable stock and supply to run a business capital and assets. 
The result of such a view is an uninspiring and detached business environment where employees are taken for granted, undervalued and the humans are treated as a replaceable stock. 

The end product of such view, in particular, in Sales and Customer Service environments are low productivity, poor customer service, terrible service delivery and high staff turnover.
This is where it gets more interesting.

Once the downfall is recognised, managerial corrective measures are introduced to get everyone back in line.
So,  instead of "lead, inspire and motivate to achieve common objectives and business goals" we end up being an enforcement institution by implementing performance management measures and policing the team members…
In other Words - We micro manage our staff.

By micromanaging our staff, we don’t do any favour to ourselves, leaders and managers, or the business mission.

Businesses are run by the most important business value - 

Its People - 

for the purpose of working with people to serve people by effectively utilising business resources in order to achieve business objectives, goals and vision. 

The human element adds value to your business, a personal touch that makes your business feel approachable, relatable, inspirational and human.
Thats what customers want and what makes them keep coming back.
The Human Element is not just a systematic method for improving the way people work together. 
It is not just how to utilise the human element to the achieve goals and better individual, team, and organisational performance. 

Humans are the most important business value - 
it's the beating heart and soul of every business no matter how big or small business is.

It is The art and craft of a business creativity and innovation. 
It is the future of your business.
Serve and treat your people well - you will serve yourself, do yourself the biggest favour and achieve greater business results.

The human element is more than just a list of 230 personal core values and behaviours. 
It's the Capital list of the lists of all individual core values together.
Understanding, knowing and appreciating the value of Human Element is the Key to Effective Leadership.

I hope you agree that an organisational success starts with the individual accomplishments and success of each employee. More time and effort you put in towards motivating, inspiring and providing support for achieving individual personal and professional goals, more benefits you gain on an organisational level. 
Develop and create a rewarding environment so that people wake up in the morning and have a desire to turn up to work with you - Not for you. 

The trick is - Treat them as your business partners.

Take for an example a Bee Hive:

Honeybees live in colonies under the leadership of one Queen bee including thousands of bees and drones. A business kept in order by the queen and her leadership. 
Although worker bees only live for approximately six weeks, they spend their lives performing tasks that benefit the survival of their colony.
And here is the kicker. Queen Bee, doesn't care how bees are going about to get the pollen and nectar as long as the job is done. 
No micromanagement there and everything is working as a well oiled machine with an ultimate support network available.
I was watching a short video about a worker bee that somehow got stuck in honey and started drowning.
Guess what happened?
Under the leadership of Queen Bee, other worker bees followed and dragged the drowning bee out. 
Furthermore, they started cleaning the poor thing. 2 were cleaning honey from her wings, the other working on her legs, another around the head area and so on…under the guidance of the queens bee.
Even bees know that job has to be done the way Queen has set the organisational structure and culture.
They receive all the support available and given all the freedom to perform their jobs.
When things get rough, Queen is there to help and lead the way.
If you have any issues, you don’t get micromanaged - you get support to overcome your problems.

What can you do as a leader or a manager first?
Inspire, motivate and lead by integrity at the forefront to instil pride honesty, trust and respect. 
Such treatment breeds Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility which weeds out unproductive defensive behaviour which is: Blame, Excuses and Denial. 

Blame, Excuses and Denial are toxic demotivators and a breeding ground for confrontations. It is an overall team cohesion and performance destroyers.
Recognise, acknowledge and validate the human importance.

Bring the human touch and humanity back into your business, Be recognised as an approachable, relatable and empathetic business. 
Develop and implement organisational customer service culture that values how external so internal human element.
When I say this to my clients, usually the first question that comes up is: What you suggesting, where should I start?
Start by recognising the Human Value acknowledge and honour humanity- Separate Human Element from the Resources.

Replace Human Resources with Human Operations or People Operations.
Follow through with showing appreciation, open two-way communication, inspire innovation and creativity...connect back with your Human side.
Let your people know that they are treated as partners, being cared for and treated with respect.
Thats a great starting point.

Second,
Re brand your business internally first.

What do I mean by that?
Almost everything has an expiry date. So is your business vision, mission and goals. 
You either grow out of your capacity,  overachieve or underachieve. 
So in either case you need new ideas, new common goals and objectives.
Every 3-5 years, every business should re-visit their Vision and mission statement. but with a huge difference: get your staff involved and this is probably the best way to get your people to connect with you and your business on a personal level and develop that partnership feeling. 
Get them involved and that’s how we take that responsibility to next level.
Now its personal!

Third, Start utilising the  
Start Stop Continue Feedback

Your front line employees are your eyes, ears and first line of defence.They see everything - The good, The bad and Ugly side of your business and your service delivery.Once every 6-9 moths get that white board out into a common area and ask your employees to identify your strengths and weaknesses in the following form:
  1. Start – what are, in their opinion, things the team should be doing in the next cycle in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness..
  1. Stop – ask them to look back at the previous cycle to identify which things didn't work well and which ones should be stopped.
  1. Continue – ask them to identify things that worked in the previous cycle and need to be part of the core activities and if so what can be done to improve the process.

Are we really losing the sense of humanity, compassion and common sense in leadership?

This is where it gets more interesting. Once the end product is recognised, managerial corrective measures take place and instead of "lead, inspire and motivate to achieve" we end up being result enforcement institution by implementing performance management measures.

Businesses are run by the most important business value - Its People - for the purpose of working with people to serve people by effectively utilising business resources in order to achieve business objectives, goals and vision. 
The human element adds value to your business, a personal touch that makes your business feel approachable, relatable, inspirational and human.

These inventions came about completely by accident, and changed the world FOREVER!

So many things happen completely accidental and random. Sometimes bad things happen for a good reason and sometimes good things happen for a bad reason. These good accidental inventions, happened for a very good reason and most of us, enjoy their benefits.



Brandy


In the 16th century, a Dutch shipmaster was trying to make wine easier to transport, and so he decided to use heat to concentrate the alcohol, with a plan to add water to it once he arrived at his destination. However, what he discovered was that the taste of concentrated wine is much better than that of watered-down wine, and so he forewent the water part of his plan and called his new alcohol brandewijn, meaning "burnt wine" in Dutch.

The Implantable Pacemaker


An adjunct professor of engineering at the University of Buffalo, Wilson Greatbatch accidentally invented the pacemaker in 1956. When working on building equipment intended to record heart sounds, the scientist used the wrong transistor and discovered that instead of recording sounds, his device gave off an electrical pulse, mimicking that of the heart. Greatbatch presented his invention to William Chardack, a surgeon at Buffalo's Veterans Administration Hospital, in 1958, and together the two were able to successfully control a dog's heartbeat and, in 1960, a human's.

Penicillin.

The first name for penicillin was “mould juice.” Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered the antibiotic in 1928, when he came back from a vacation and found that a green mold called Pennicilium notatum had contaminated Petri dishes in his lab … and were killing some of the bacteria he’d been growing.
So he isolated the mold, grew more of it, and then experimented to see how many other bacteria it could kill. Lots of them, it turned out. We now know that penicillin works by preventing bacteria from forming new cell walls.

He identified a substance in the mold capable of inhibiting the growth of many common bacteria that infect humans. He called it penicillin.

During World War II, the urgent need for new antibacterial drugs led Ernst Chain and Howard Florey to further develop penicillin for therapeutic use.

Mass production of the antibiotic began in the early 1940s in the United States. The use of penicillin in the military greatly reduced the death rate from wounds in World War II.

Fleming was knighted in 1944 in recognition of his work, and in 1945 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Florey and Chain.

Anesthesia


In 1776, American dentist Horas Wells discovered nitrous oxide, popularly known as "paradise gas" or "laughing gas." His discovery soon became very popular and began to be used at social gatherings and in amusement parks as something that would make people laugh and entertain. He noted at one of these events that the actor who was under the influence of this gas during the play fell awkwardly, but after the fall he continued to act as if nothing had happened. So he discovered that while under the influence of nitric oxide, people do not feel pain. From 1844, he began using it for anesthesia to repair teeth.

Eraser


In 1770, Englishman Joseph Prestley mistakenly tried to wipe the ink with a gum resin from a tree instead of bread crumbs that people had previously wiped ink with, and found that it actually cleans the matter much better than crumbs. He soon got rich by selling his invention - eraser erasers.

Ice cream on a stick - Popsicles


Back in 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Eperson mixed a wooden stick with a juice made of powder and water and accidentally left it on the terrace. The night was very cold, and in the morning he was greeted with frozen juice with a stick. Delighted with the result, he patented his discovery in 1924 under the name Epsicle. A few years later the children persuaded him to change the name of his invention to Popsicle.

Viagra


One of the most famous accidental discoveries is Viagra. The chemists who made it sought a cure for high blood pressure and heart problems. During the test, they did not see any results in this regard, but found that this blue pill successfully affects the intimate parts of the male body.

Nutella


After World War II, it was very difficult and expensive to get cocoa beans, so confectioner Pietro Ferrero came up with a chocolate cream that replaced 50 percent of the cocoa beans with hazelnuts. The dessert, which he called gingerbread, became a huge hit and Ferero soon began selling it to other treats. One warm day the chocolate melted in the sun in a fine thick cream, which he called supercream. Today he is called the nutella.

Coke


John Stit Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist who developed a serious addiction to morphine, decided to come up with a drug that would help him get rid of those awful habits. He invented syrup from cola-nut, caffeine, coca leaves, vegetable and sugar extracts. The syrup was sold as a medicine until one day the waiter diluted it in mineral water. His invention soon became very popular, and "Coke" became a brand on July 6, 1887.

Vulcanized Rubber


Vulcanized rubber, used to make durable things like car tires, was accidentally invented in 1839 by Charles Goodyear. Though he had been trying to create a weatherproof rubber for years, he was only successful in doing so when he accidentally dropped some regular rubber mixed with sulfur onto a hot stove and found that it still maintained its structure.

"Being present" in a team alone is not enough to be a good team member; you need strong " I " values to produce results on " I " level and be able to collaborate and strive to achieve the organisational objective with other members of your team. The Workplace Happiness - comes from thinking of and helping others; all the internal pain and suffering comes from thinking only of oneself. A common workplace is a network of a cooperative and collaborative effort in order to achieve organisational common objectives - Business Growth & accomplishing the organisational vision and mission. To achieve business goals, adopt a simple but yet effective stand: People work with people to serve people, rather than: "You work for me and you have to do what I ask you to do!". Work stress can be greatly reduced simply by an intentional commitment to cultivating kindness, calmness and situational awareness and by letting mindfulness guide our actions and responses. When you feel impatient with your work or colleagues, you might be resisting how things are and fighting the fact that you don't have total control - that's the signal that you need a collaborative approach. Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to yourself and others. Take the time to appreciate and express support for someone else’s work or project. Learn to regard work as an integral part of your growth and approach work as a way to elevate your purpose, rather than the means to survival. Do you believe, that there is no " I " in Team? Strong teams are the products of strong #leadership , clear organisational vision and powerful common goals. A team capital - is a sum of how much a leader values, respects and appreciates all individuals and their qualities, traits, passion and the human element - bound and driven by the common cause, mutual benefits, common objectives and a shared vision. #TEAMWORK Starts with " I " continues with " WE ": I am an individual, a Human being, a person with feelings and values, skills and life experience - so is everybody on my team! Strong team leaders align themselves with each individual and ensure that each team member values complement one another - there are no 2 the same individuals with an absolutely identical way of thinking, feeling and behaving. It is leaders responsibility to assemble the best possible team and to give every member the methods, resources and means to shine as a part of a team and instil pride of being part of "WE". Your team is the heart and soul of your operation but each individual in that team is the force, fuel and drive of that heart and soul with their unique abilities, skills, experiences and commitment to the common goals. Do you still believe that there is no " I " in Team? 

Leader - To be or not to be?

Leadership is a choice - not a position.

Courageously take the initiative to make good things happen. Think Big, Doo Good, Be Kind Empathise, be patient and persistent. Keep investing in your personal and professional development and stay on top of your game. Your security does not come from your job or from the patronage of other people - it comes from your ability to exceed needs and solve problems. Pick your battles very carefully Take initiative based on facts and in the form of well-thought process. The 4 main leadership values are vision, discipline, passion and conscience. But the supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, you're no leader. Five Areas of Leadership Emotional Intelligence: 1. Self-Awareness and Control. The ability to fully understand ourselves and use that information to manage emotions productively. Understanding of our emotions and the impact emotions have on performance, our impact on others, self-control, managing anger, disappointment or failure (resulting in resilience), and fear (resulting in courage). 2. Empathy. The ability to understand the perspective of others. Actively listening and understanding others’ points of view, understanding how our words and actions affect others and wanting to be of service to others. 3. Social Expertness. The ability to build genuine relationships and bonds and express caring, concern. Relationship building, collaboration, and conflict resolution. 4. Personal Influence. The ability to positively lead and inspire others, as well as ourselves. Leading others, creating a positive work climate, and getting results from others are the components of influence. Self- confidence, initiative and motivation, optimism, and flexibility. 5. Mastery of Purpose and Vision. The ability to bring authenticity to our lives and live out our intentions and values. Understanding our purpose, values and behaviours.
